Start with volume and recency

Many recent reviews say more than a handful of old ones. A service's review page on this site lists its reviews newest first.

Read reviews for the same kind of order

Look for buyers who ordered what you plan to order. A seller strong at one package may be less practised at another.

Check communication and deadlines

Most problems on a freelance marketplace are about communication and timing rather than skill. Reviews that mention both are the most useful.

Message the seller first

If your order is unusual, message the seller before buying. Their answer, and how quickly it comes, is a useful preview of the order itself.
